Understanding fully well that industry like ours can have a serious impact on the environment, we deal wisely with our resources and manage residue such as effluent, waste and emissions very precisely. Through sustainable production processes we ensure that surging demand for our products does not then result in the detriment of the resources which are necessary for the continuance of life.

We have adopted a certified Environmental Management System (EMS); ISO 14001:2004. This management tool enables us to identify and control the environmental impact of our activities, products or services, to improve environmental performance continually, and to implement a systematic approach to setting environmental objectives and targets, to achieving these and to demonstrating that they have been achieved. Aspects involved therein:

•    Solid waste management
•    Effluent emission: For the most part our effluent is over flowing coolant from our  machinery.
•    Emissions to air: Smoke, noise, dust, heat and particulate matter.
•    Spillage to soil: oil, grease and coolant
•    Natural resources: Water, energy, flora and fauna.

The supervision and management of each aspect is under a team leader whose responsibility is to ensure that all individuals and processes involved therein perform effectively.

This EMS is conducted through the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) which serves as a process-based guideline running on the following schedule:
A)    Activities: The processes involved in production.
B)    Personal responsibility: What each individual owes himself and the community at large in ensuring that order is maintained in spite of the activities of production.
C)   Time frame: Targets are set within which to achieve environmental targets.
D)   Progress: Assessments of what’s been achieved.

Scrap metal: In the past we used to have a problem handling scrap metal like off-cuts and filings which would pile up to near unmanageable volumes at Roofings Limited. Today, with the commissioning of Roofings Rolling Mills (RRM), we have the capacity to bale and transport it to RRM and recycle all this scrap into new usable steel raw material.
Steel has a significant advantage over most industrial products in that it is 100% recyclable, making it perhaps the most environmentally sustainable manufacturing product.

Coolant: is contained and recycled over and over again, not simply to ease costs but also to alleviate the dangers that can arise out of negligent handling This liquid; very necessary for the machines’ longevity can have adverse effects if it escapes and sips into the ground or makes contact with plant or animal life.
In regard to general environmental awareness, we often get involved in community based initiatives like in Seguku Trading Centre, where we participated and facilitated a project titled ‘Community Voluntary Cleanliness Service’ which was initiated by Holy Family Junior School.

At such events, people in the community are equipped with basic knowledge and skills that go a long way in helping preserve the environment in which they dwell. As residents, we attend community Village meetings and when needed we have given full support; working on the drainage channel, filling  portholes and general maintenance of the green around and along Entebbe road.

Roofings Group’s continued observation of environmental procedures has brought us recognition from certified agencies like National Environment Management Agency (NEMA) and NEMKO.
